Considering college?

Every college wants to attract the best students it can. When colleges consider student applications, they take into account many factors:

  • Academic records – beginning in 9th grade

  • Participation in community, school activities, and sports

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Personal qualities

  • SAT I & SAT II test scores

When applying to colleges, the following guidelines will help students to better present themselves:

  • It’s important not only to “know yourself,” but to “be yourself.”

  • Seek to set yourself apart from others by letting the college know of your special talents.

  • Show a desire to contribute to the college community.

  • Presenting yourself in a slightly unconventional way can be to your benefit.

Scholarships and careers

During the year, different colleges and private scholarships are offered to the students. These will be compiled in a document called “Cool Cash for College.” However, it is not too early to begin your private scholarship and career search using several web sites. Some good sites for students and parents are:

www.fastweb.com

www.educationplanner.org

www.CollegeBoard.com

www.act.org

www.careercruising.com

The Guidance counselors strongly encourage both parents and students to become familiar with www.CollegeBoard.com. We believe you will find valuable information preparing for the PSAT, SAT, and college. A great way to practice for the SAT is to do the question of the day. We recommend that the question of the day begin with students in 9th grade.
